Bringing People Together: 5 Activities That Work in Aged Care
Feeling part of something can make a real difference in aged care. It’s not always about big events — sometimes the simple stuff gets people smiling and talking. Here are a few ideas we’ve seen work well, with a bit of a local twist.
1. Singing Old Favourites
Doesn’t have to be fancy. A speaker, a list of classics — maybe a bit of Slim Dusty or Farnham — and you’ve got a sing-along. Outside if the weather’s nice. No one has to be pitch-perfect, just willing to join in.
2. Decorating Lamingtons
This one always gets people involved. Set up a few bowls with chocolate and coconut, maybe throw in some Anzac bikkies. It’s hands-on, not too tricky, and you end up with something tasty at the end.
3. Telling Stories
Ask about childhood, first jobs, old pets, or what a typical Saturday looked like back in the day. Use a few old photos or items to spark memories. You’ll often find people light up once they get going.
4. Bingo with a Bush Twist
For residents who like getting outside (or near a window), create a bingo sheet with things like gumtrees, magpies, or clouds shaped like animals. Indoors works too — you can even play with a video on in the background.
5. Footy Chat and Tipping
Run a small footy tipping comp. Doesn’t matter if everyone knows the teams — it’s more about the conversation. Add a chocolate bar or a cup of tea for the winner. Light-hearted fun and a bit of routine.
It’s not about filling time — it’s about giving people a reason to show up and talk. That’s where connection really starts.
