Group Size:
Ideal for 4–12 participants (pairs or small groups)
Instructions:
1. Welcome & Introduction (5–10 mins)

Briefly introduce the activity. Show a finished coaster as an example.

Explain the steps simply, and reassure participants that there is no “right or wrong” design.
2. Design Phase (15–20 mins)
-
Encourage participants to plan their design in the tray.
-
Let them play with colors and patterns using the ceramic tiles.

Staff/volunteers can assist with suggestions or hand-over-hand support if needed.
3. Grouting & Tile Placement (15–20 mins)

One person in each pair grouts the base using the spreader.
-
The other places the tiles on the grout according to their plan.
-
Allow time for light adjustment and creativity.
4. Clean Up & Chat (10 mins)

Clean hands and surfaces.
-
Encourage discussion about their coaster—colors chosen, who it’s for, etc.
5. Display or Gift (Optional)

Coasters can be dried and then used, displayed in the facility, or wrapped to give to family members.

Take a photo of the participant with their finished piece for memory boards or newsletters.
